Our Story

Who We Are......

FICA has transitioned over the years from being an AIDS Service Organization into a Development oriented organization. Vulnerable children, adolescents and youth are always at the core of all FICA interventions. In 2010, thirteen years after its formation, FICA was officially registered as a Private Voluntary Organization (PVO) in Zimbabwe under the registration number PVO 20/2010. The organization currently runs a school and an orphanage in Chegutu, implements health, education, psychosocial support, food security and livelihood interventions through its network of community based caregivers. Funding partners with a working history with FICA include the German Technical Coorperation Agency (GTZ), The Stephen Lewis Foundation, Mercy Corps, Child Protection Society (CPS), and other local partners not mentioned. Most importantly, the work done by FICA continues to feed into the national development agenda, made possible working in collaboration with government departments and agencies such as the National AIDS Council, Department of Social Services, District Administration, Ministry of Health and Child Care, Ministry of Education, Agricultural Extension Services amongst others. FICA continues to work in Harare, Chegutu and Murombedzi and is focused on building resilient communities through capacitating them to run sustainable intervention programs.

For the past 20 Years

FICA has served vulnerable communities through selfless dedication....

……and continues to serve these communities as highlighted in the current organizational strategic plan running from 2017 to 2022. FICA work is governed by 4 main strategic pillars/ thematic areas which are highlighted as follows:

  1. Community-led Advocacy

  2.  Access to Health Services

  3. Sexual and Reproductive Health for Young People

  4. Capacity Building on Livelihoods and Food Security

How we help on each thematic area

Access to Health Services:

FICA seeks to promote healthy lives and well-being for vulnerable children, women and youth in its operational areas through increased access to comprehensive, quality HIV, STI and GBV prevention care and support services; improved knowledge on gender, gender based violence and sexual and reproductive health.

Young Peoples' Sexual Reproductive Health & Rights:

Working with young people is always at the core of FICA programming. The organization seeks to improve access to sexual and reproductive health information by young people; increase access to HIV and SRH services by young people and facilitate transformation of negative gender norms and practices that stimulate GBV through community led advocacy.

Community-led Advocacy:

The foundations of FICA are set on working with vulnerable children. As a result, within the 5 year strategic period of 2017 to 2022, FICA will be working on improving the capacity of vulnerable children as right holders to proactively claim and access their rights by holding duty bearers responsible to fulfill their duties. FICA also promotes increased awareness among duty bearers on their obligations in promoting and providing services to vulnerable populations as part of their duty-bound mandates.

Capacity Building on Livelihoods and Food Security:

In order to promote a layered and integrated approach to its programing, FICA is working on ensuring that its beneficiaries are also food secure. Strategies include working with vulnerable women and caregivers building their capacity to increase their income levels, and also building the capacity of young men and women to acquire vocational skills for self-sustenance.
